KGOU to Expand Service in Western Oklahoma
OU public radio station adding signal at 89.1 FM in Clinton, Okla.
NORMAN – University of Oklahoma public radio station KGOU has reached agreement with KCCU Radio at Cameron University to acquire the license for KCCU’s transmitter location in Clinton, Oklahoma. Documents transferring the transmitter license from KCCU to KGOU have been filed with the Federal Communications Commission, starting a required 30-day comment period. After expiration of the comment period, the remainder of the FCC license transfer process will begin. KGOU expects to gain control of the license for 89.1 FM in Clinton by the end of 2017.
Once the license transfer is complete, KGOU will assume operations and provide programming for 89.1 FM, which covers much of western Oklahoma. The transmitter and antenna are located on an existing tower located about three miles south-southwest of Clinton in Washita County. By adding the Clinton transmitter location, KGOU will expand its service area from 22 to 32 counties in Oklahoma.
By transferring the license to OU and KGOU, public radio service in the area will not be interrupted. KCCU will continue to broadcast on 89.1 FM during its on-air fundraiser in a few weeks.
“We are pleased to be able to extend our broadcast footprint and provide NPR and KGOU-originated programming to listeners in the 89.1 FM area,” said Dick Pryor, KGOU general manager. “Adding the Clinton transmitter is an exciting opportunity for KGOU and the University of Oklahoma to serve new audiences in western Oklahoma.”
KGOU broadcasts News/Talk programs (featuring popular NPR drive-time programs Morning Edition and All Things Considered) during the day, with jazz, blues and world music programs during evenings and weekends. As an NPR member station, KGOU airs NPR newscasts along with award-winning, locally produced KGOU state and local news, weather and traffic reports. KGOU also leads a statewide public media collaboration, StateImpact Oklahoma.
