The Graduate College Seal & Logo

University of Oklahoma Graduate College Seal

Graduate College Seal

The Graduate College seal, designed in 2009 by Miranda Sowell in celebration of the Graduate College centennial, features the graduate gateway emblem designed by Hadley Jerman. Sowell and Jerman both graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Visual Arts.

The seal embodies the core value of a graduate education at the University of Oklahoma while simultaneously capturing the tradition and history of the university with the symbolic representation of one of OU’s many historic archways.

The gate’s pillar represents the strength and support provided by the graduate faculty and staff.

The lamplight on the pillar represents the beacon that will guide students along their educational journey.

The arch represents the entrance to knowledge.

The bottom and right sides of the arch entrance are stylized to represent a ‘G.’ Therefore, the arch as a ‘G’ represents the entrance to graduate knowledge.

The seal is primarily used for official Graduate College purposes: publications, certificates, legal documents, and other official college documents and printed materials.

Graduate College and Graduate
Student Life Logo

The Graduate College logo was designed in 2014 by the Graduate College’s visual communications design specialist, Miranda Sowell. The logo reflects the expansion of the Graduate College’s Graduate Student Life vision and the inception of the Graduate Student Life Center.

Like the seal, the Graduate College logo embodies the core value of a graduate education at OU and is now the preferred mark of the Graduate College and Graduate Student Life.

The stylized ‘G’ represents every aspect of the graduate experience, while the torch retains the guiding light of the seal, representing the purpose of the Graduate College and Graduate Student Life.

The ‘G’ is also intended to remind one of a torch, symbolizing academic enlightenment and the love and pursuit of knowledge.
