News and Information

October is National Fire Prevention Month

October is National Fire Prevention Month and here at the University of Oklahoma we are dedicated to the safety of all our students, staff, faculty, and guests! To help ensure the safety of every individual on our campus we take the time to outfit and test our buildings for fire safety whether that be testing the alarms or maintaining fire extinguishers in all buildings or conducting fire drills and providing fire prevention trainings. If you have any fire safety questions, contact the OU Fire Marshal's office at

Here are some fire safety tips:

1. Have a fire safety plan and make sure every member of your family knows the plan. Have fire drills a couple times a year to keep the plan fresh on everyone’s mind!

2. Have smoke alarms on every level of your house and test those smoke alarms often! Make sure your apartments have smoke alarms as well!

3. Know at least two ways out of the building in case one escape route is blocked.

4. In case of a fire, get out, stay out, and call 911.

And always remember: Be prepared, not scared!
