The new year is starting off well for the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Not only is the College seeing a groundswell of support for its Second Century Campaign for medical student scholarships, but its first major event of 2012, the Evening of Excellence dinner, had one of its biggest showings in its history, both in attendance and money raised.

“We deeply appreciate the generosity of our donors and friends who made this year’s Evening of Excellence the most successful ever, raising $175,000 in crucial support for the research of promising young faculty members,” said Dewayne Andrews, M.D., OU Health Sciences Center senior vice president and provost and executive dean of the College of Medicine.  “Moreover, the Evening of Excellence provided an opportunity to honor three remarkable and inspiring individuals: internationally recognized scientist and former Provost Joe Ferretti; his wife, Professor Marti Ferretti, chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and longtime advocate for disabled children; and Terrence L. Stull, M.D., who, as chair of the Department of Pediatrics, has overseen its tremendous growth and development.”

Nine hundred people attended the Jan. 26 dinner and awards ceremony, sponsored by the College of Medicine Alumni Association. Proceeds from the event support young faculty scientists and help them become competitive for national grants.  Since 1985, the research fund has awarded more than $2.3 million in seed grants to 125 investigators and now has an endowment of over $1 million.

Making basic scientific discoveries at the laboratory bench and translating them into better medicine for patients at the bedside is the overarching goal of the College of Medicine’s research program.
