Marathon Oil contributes $135,250 to OU energy programs

Corporate

The University of Oklahoma has received a $135,250 contribution from Marathon Oil to benefit the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy, the Energy Libraries Online, Inc., and the Energy Management Program in Price College of Business.

Darren Williams, Oklahoma City-based subsurface manager for Marathon and the company’s executive sponsor for OU, made the gift presentation at a luncheon Oct. 26 on the Norman campus attended by Marathon representatives and leaders from the OU areas that are benefiting from the donation.

In addition to Williams, Marathon was represented by Sarah Clark, talent acquisition manager; Elizabeth Costello, human resource consultant; Dale Malody, operations manager; John Thorkelson, regional geology supervisor; Ron Marchel, exploration supervisor; and Andrew Bishop, land supervisor.

OU representatives included Larry Grillot, dean of Mewbourne College and Lester A. Day Family Chair; Randy Keller, director of the Oklahoma Geological Survey and Edward Lamb McCollough Chair in Geology and Geophysics; and Steve Long, director of the Energy Management Program.

Of the gift, $100,000 is designated for the Energy Libraries Online, Inc., a non-profit, online reference library that was formed in 2007 to preserve the records from Oklahoma’s long history of oil and gas exploration and production. Its goal, Professor Keller said, is to address both the inaccessibility of unique data collections and to archive all of the paper records contained within the irreplaceable libraries of the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS), Oklahoma City Geological Society, The Oklahoma Well Log Library in Tulsa, Ardmore Geological Library, and the Corporation Commission.  Funds from Marathon will help with the archiving.

Additionally, $25,250 will be used for programs in Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy, and $10,000 for scholarships in Energy Management.

This latest contribution brings Marathon’s total giving to OU to $533,446 for energy-related programs.
