T. Elon Dancy II


T. Elon Dancy II, Ph. D. is a man who has decided to dedicate his life to the plight of the young black male college student through substantial written research and published works. T. Elon Dancy II is Associate Professor of Adult and Higher Education and Faculty Fellow in the Office of Senior Vice President and Provost at The University of Oklahoma. He holds affiliate faculty appointments in African & African American Studies, Women’s & Gender Studies and the OU Center for Social Justice.

An education sociologist, Dr. Dancy studies the relationship between college experience and identity development. More specifically, his research focuses on issues of access and equity in the educational pipeline as informed by race, gender, class, and the intersection of these social identities. Dr. Dancy’s research is driven by questions related to sociohistorical contexts, masculinity formations, and the ways in which policies (e.g., education reform, identity-based initiatives) are implicated in academic and social outcomes. With nearly 70 publications to his credit, he is author or editor of 5 books including The Brother Code: Manhood and Masculinity among African American Males in College and Black Male Collegians: Increasing Access, Retention and Persistence in Higher Education. Dr. Dancy is past editor of the College Student Affairs Journal.

In 2014, Diverse Issues in Higher Education Magazine named him Top Emerging Scholar for his study of underrepresented students and campus diversity. Dr. Dancy's research on males of color and academic outcomes has been supported by a number of funding agencies including the National Science Foundation. He currently serves on the executive boards of the American Education Research Association’s Special Interest Group on Black Education and the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education.
